WHEN REBECCA got home that night, she found Theo working on his laptop alone, wearing his reading glasses. âAbbieâs in her own bed,â he said proudly.
âThatâs great,â she said.
âYouâre always saying you canât sleep with her in our bed, so I moved her.â
âThanks for doing that.â He shook his head, hurt, as though unable to understand why she didnât have more of a reaction. How could she begin to explain it? They had gotten so entrenched it was impossible to begin to know how to dig themselves out.
She went into the bathroom to freshen up. Staring at her reflection in the mirror, she thought back to that dinner party in Carroll Gardens all those years before. Maybe the reason Theo had stopped making love to her was because she was meant to fuck Stuart Ashby. This was why Theo had told her about the businessman in St. Louis. Heâd had a kind of marital ESP, known that one day she would have an opportunity to have sex with someone who would make her happy. And because he loved her, he didnât want to stand in her way.
She thought about Lizzie fucking Jay four times a week and wondered whether it was her will or his. It was hard to imagine Lizzie being into a man. It was obvious she was still a lesbian.
Rebecca felt awful about what had happened at Lizzieâs apartment that night. She shouldnât have led her on when she didnât really want anything to happen. But Stuart had been so cruel to her at Southpaw, lecturing her about what kind of mother she should be, and she was lonely.
She was worried sheâd given Lizzie the wrong idea. And now they were supposed to go meet these so-called swingers. Sheâd have to find a way to get out of it.
In bed, she put on a sleep mask and turned her back to Theo. âHow was it?â he asked.
âWhat?â
âThe performance.â
âCassieâs totally psycho.â
âAre you just saying that because youâre jealous she goes out with him?â
âNo.â
âAre you jealous she goes out with him?â He hadnât touched her in over a year. What did he care?
âWe broke up six years ago. Iâm not jealous.â
She felt a hand on her back. The sensation was so unusual that she took off the mask and turned over to face Theo to be sure it was actually his hand. âI was thinking maybe weâd try to get away in August,â he said. Over the holidays they had gone to San Francisco to visit his mother and stepfather, but it hadnât been much of a vacation. With a baby in tow, vacations meant no sitting, cramped sleeping quarters, and hellish plane rides.
She flopped on her back. âOkay,â she said warily.
âI know things havenât been easy the past year, and I think part of it is because Iâm so stressed out with work. Tom said heâd give me a week, but he wants me to take it before the end of the summer because we start on the Jane Street condos in the fall.
