The North Fork

WHEN REBECCA got home that night, she found Theo working on his laptop alone, wearing his reading glasses. “Abbie’s in her own bed,” he said proudly.

“That’s great,” she said.

“You’re always saying you can’t sleep with her in our bed, so I moved her.”

“Thanks for doing that.” He shook his head, hurt, as though unable to understand why she didn’t have more of a reaction. How could she begin to explain it? They had gotten so entrenched it was impossible to begin to know how to dig themselves out.

She went into the bathroom to freshen up. Staring at her reflection in the mirror, she thought back to that dinner party in Carroll Gardens all those years before. Maybe the reason Theo had stopped making love to her was because she was meant to fuck Stuart Ashby. This was why Theo had told her about the businessman in St. Louis. He’d had a kind of marital ESP, known that one day she would have an opportunity to have sex with someone who would make her happy. And because he loved her, he didn’t want to stand in her way.

She thought about Lizzie fucking Jay four times a week and wondered whether it was her will or his. It was hard to imagine Lizzie being into a man. It was obvious she was still a lesbian.

Rebecca felt awful about what had happened at Lizzie’s apartment that night. She shouldn’t have led her on when she didn’t really want anything to happen. But Stuart had been so cruel to her at Southpaw, lecturing her about what kind of mother she should be, and she was lonely.

She was worried she’d given Lizzie the wrong idea. And now they were supposed to go meet these so-called swingers. She’d have to find a way to get out of it.

In bed, she put on a sleep mask and turned her back to Theo. “How was it?” he asked.

“What?”

“The performance.”

“Cassie’s totally psycho.”

“Are you just saying that because you’re jealous she goes out with him?”

“No.”

“Are you jealous she goes out with him?” He hadn’t touched her in over a year. What did he care?

“We broke up six years ago. I’m not jealous.”

She felt a hand on her back. The sensation was so unusual that she took off the mask and turned over to face Theo to be sure it was actually his hand. “I was thinking maybe we’d try to get away in August,” he said. Over the holidays they had gone to San Francisco to visit his mother and stepfather, but it hadn’t been much of a vacation. With a baby in tow, vacations meant no sitting, cramped sleeping quarters, and hellish plane rides.

She flopped on her back. “Okay,” she said warily.

“I know things haven’t been easy the past year, and I think part of it is because I’m so stressed out with work. Tom said he’d give me a week, but he wants me to take it before the end of the summer because we start on the Jane Street condos in the fall.
